Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How can I heat up water or other liquids using steam?

A: Our line of Pick Direct Steam Injection heaters can provide you with precise temperature control of your process fluid by injecting steam directly into the stream.

Q: I have superheated steam but my process can't use steam that hot. What can I do?

A: Pick Heaters has a desuperheater that will inject water into your steam line, dropping the temperature until it is just above saturation.

Q: I currently have a shell and tube heat exchanger but I'm tired of the tubes fouling and taking the entire bundle out to clean. Do you have an alternative?

A: Our GEA line of plate and frame heat exchangers can provide the same heat transfer ability in 1/4 surface area and a fraction of the weight. The exchanger can be opened up and the individual plates cleaned, providing easier and quicker maintenance.

Q: I have a sub-zero cold storage room but I keep needing to shut everything down and clean the frost off of the coils. Do you have a solution?

A: Our Niagara Blower No-Frost system can provide dehumidified air with a dew point down to -40°F, virtually eliminating frost on the coils.

Q: I have instrumentation that keeps freezing in my refinery. Unfortunately, there are a lot of explosive vapors in the area. Can you provide freeze protection in this explosive environment?

A: Hazloc Heaters are specifically designed for heating in flammable or explosive conditions. We offer a range of NEMA enclosures, depending on the flammable material. Heating is done either with steam if available or intrinsically safe electric coils and a closed loop glycol system.

Q: I need to install an expansion joint underground. Do you have such a joint that can be buried and require no maintenance?

A: Yes, we have the Senior Flexonics Pathway eXternally PRESSurized (X-PRESS) expansion joint. It can be buried and since it does not have any packing does not require any maintenance.

Q: I have a process where I want to send the waste water to the sewer but I have oil mixed in with it. How can I separate the oil from the water?

A: Amistco offers liquid coalescers that are designed to separate water and oil, allowing the reuse of the oil and the discharge of the clean water to the sewer.

Q: My damper in my stack is worn out and is allowing too much gas to leak past when I close it. I don't want to take the stack down to fix it because of the cost and downtime. What can I do?

A: Senior Flexonics Pathway offers a damper kit that can be installed on an existing stack without removal of the stack. The drive and linkage components are installed external to the stack and the old internal vanes are replace with new.

Q: I have a very nasty, corrosive liquid that I need to heat up. I have hot water but any exchanger that I use is eaten by the process liquid. How can I heat it up without destroying my heat exchanger?

A: Our SGL Carbon line of graphite heat exchangers will solve your problem. Graphite is inert to almost any liquid or gas and will not corrode.

Q: I have an old cooling tower and the fill is completely shot. Do you offer a way to replace the fill and the louvers?

A: GEA Power Cooling will come out to your facility, investigate the cooling towers, provide you with a complete repair plan, and then perform the labor of replacing your fill and your louvers, returning you to optimum performance.

Q: My process has a lot of hot water that I just dump to the sewer. Is there anything I can do with it?

A: It depends on the temperature of the water you are sewering and what you want to use it for. We have shell and tube as well as plate and frame heat exchangers that can recover the heat from your water to heat or preheat another process liquid or gas.

Q: I have a boiler and I'm dumping a lot of hot exhaust into the air. Is there anything I can do with that heat?

A: Yes, there is! Depending on the design of your boiler, we can work with our principals and provide you with an economizer that can preheat the combustion air, reducing your fuel costs.

Q: My facility does a lot of washdowns of the floors and eqipment and everything stays wet. I hate mold. Is there anything I can do about the water?

A: This is a common problem that we see. We have a product that is designed to dehumidify air down to -40°F. It can dry the room out in a matter of minutes. In fact, a customer (who also hates mold) performs washdowns every 30 minutes. Our systems dry them out in a fraction of that time, leaving them dry and mold-free.

Q: I have piping that keeps cracking and breaking, usually at a tank or a valve. Can you help me figure out what is going on?

A: It is probably stress caused by thermal expansion of the piping. We can help perform a stress analysis of your system and design a hanger and expansion joint solution that will relieve the stresses, stopping the damage.

Q: The government is cracking down on our emissions and they're telling us that we can't dump our waste water any more. What can I do?

A: A lot of companies are now being required to have Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) from their facilities. We can provide evaporative technology that can recover 100% of the water in a purified form to be reused in your process as well as crystalization of the contaminants that will allow for dry removal. You can easily achieve a ZLD state and meet your government requirements.
